SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

WINGED FIST

The “Winged Fist” was the logo that adorned the jersey of NYC’s famed Irish American Athletic Club. The Winged Fists of NYC were known for embracing runners of all races and religions and for winning medals. In fact, by the time the first Flying Finn (Hannes Kohlemainen) joined them, the club had already produced America’s first African American Olympic gold medal winner in John Taylor. The club would go on to accept Jewish and Italian runners who would win for America or their country of birth. This is how society and sport should work—equally accessible for all regardless of ethnicity.
