KARHU approached Alan to provide a custom incense fragrance that aligns with the seasonal theme of "Flow State."
Over the course of our conversation, we explore how Alan got started, the inspiration behind his creations, the distinct qualities of Square Trade's handcrafted fragrances, the soothing properties of incense, and how the production process fosters a state of flow. We also discuss the inherent connection between home fragrance and personal style as well as the expansion into menswear and home goods within the boutique.
I was on the hunt for a good Campfire scented candle, and I couldn’t find one that I liked or that captured the scent I was seeking. So, I started trying to make my own. I ordered a candle making kit and some fragrance oils and started tinkering around. Fast forward 12 years and here we are!
What I think sets us apart is our fragrances aren’t overly complex but not single note either. They smell like what the name implies they smell like. Our scents aren’t overpowering as well, nothing worse that walking into a brick wall of Vanilla Cupcake fragrance.
We seek to have our fragrances add to your environment, not overpower. For me personally, fragrance helps set the tone of your space. It can be calming and welcoming. It’s especially cool with our incense because you can watch the tendrils of smoke as they move through the air and that can really help you relax.
For me, creating is the sole purpose of my brand. I started out of a desire for something that didn’t exist. When I have an idea, it’s the only thing I can focus on. Luckily for me the use of fragrance is that flow state I am entering. I think that if your surroundings are pleasant and calm, you have a much easier time getting in the zone.
I would set up at menswear focused trade shows, like Liberty Fairs (RIP) and would discover all sorts of brands that weren’t really represented in my area. I would say man I wish I could have a store to carry all these brands so people in Richmond could discover them as well. That idea turned more serious as time went by. Square Trade was doing its thing, and being the glutton for punishment that I am, I dove headfirst into opening a store. We just turned 4 years old and its crazy to see its evolution and growth.
When you style yourself, you are telling the world how you want to be perceived, why wouldn’t you do that at home as well? You wear clothes that you like and find comfortable, the same should be applied to your living space, where you spend a lot of personal time. The environment you create should get that same attention as your personal style. So, when you pick how you want your home to smell, you should do that with intention and care. Not sure if I really answered that but yeah, style doesn’t stop with clothing!

The Mestari Control is the newest silhouette in the KARHU collection and our latest model to feature a robust, slip-resistant outsole. Inspired by several prototypes from KARHU’s back catalogues, the Mestari Control utilizes a novel traction pattern found on an early 80s version of the Albatross. Our design team has reimagined this unique outsole to create a sturdier version of the Mestari with more grip for day-to-day use. Additionally, the upper of the Mestari Control features detailed tooling inspired by an older silhouette, the KARHU Balance.
